Amazon Prime vs miniTV: The Big Difference You Need to Know in 2026

miniTV

If you shop online in the U.S., you almost certainly know Amazon Prime. Fewer people know about Amazon miniTV, even though it pops up in searches. Many assume it’s a new Prime perk, so here is how both work.

What Amazon Prime costs in 2026

Prime is Amazon’s paid membership. It costs $14.99 a month or $139 a year, and Amazon said in March 2026 that this price wasn’t changing. You get far more than shipping. The package includes free Prime shipping on millions of items, Prime Video, Amazon Music, unlimited photo storage with Amazon Photos, Prime Reading, Prime Gaming, and cheap prescription options through Amazon Pharmacy. Prime Day and other member-only sales are part of it too.

The annual plan saves money. Twelve months at $14.99 comes to $179.88, so paying $139 up front saves about $40. If you’re not sure you’ll stick around, the monthly plan lets you quit without losing a big prepayment.

The ads on Prime Video

Prime Video has been a sore point for subscribers. Amazon began showing ads in its movies and shows on January 29, 2024, and offered an ad-free upgrade for $2.99 more per month. Prime members who had paid for years suddenly saw commercials.

There was another change this spring. Amazon announced on March 13 that the ad-free tier would be renamed Prime Video Ultra and cost $4.99 a month starting April 10, 2026, up from $2.99. Annual Prime members can switch to a Prime Video Ultra annual plan for $45.99. The core Prime Video benefit also picked up a perk: HD, HDR and now Dolby Vision are included at no extra cost.

Even “ad-free” has an asterisk. Amazon says live TV, sports and some other ad-supported content can still include ads on Ultra. So if you’re paying mainly to avoid commercials during Thursday Night Football, that won’t happen.

Standalone Prime Video

You don’t need full Prime to watch Prime Video. Prime Video can be bought on its own for $8.99 a month. That makes sense if you never order from Amazon. If you place even a handful of orders a year, full Prime at $14.99 usually wins, because shipping alone is worth the gap.

So what is Amazon miniTV?

This is where search results get confusing. Amazon miniTV is not a U.S. product, and it is not a hidden section of Prime Video. Amazon.in launched it in May 2021 as a free, ad-supported video streaming service available inside the Amazon shopping app in India. The shows included web series, comedy, tech news, food, beauty and fashion, with Indian studios and creators.

It was built for mobile first. At launch it ran on Android phones inside the shopping app, with iOS and mobile web promised later. Amazon described the idea as making the shopping app one place to shop, pay and watch free videos. Prime Video, by contrast, requires a subscription and carries Amazon Originals, movies and shows.

Amazon.in launches free video streaming service ‘miniTV’ +2

I did not find any sign that Amazon has launched miniTV for U.S. customers. If you see an app or website promising “Amazon miniTV USA,” be careful. It may be a third-party site or a scam. Don’t enter payment details anywhere except Amazon’s own website and app.

What Americans get instead

The closest American equivalent is Amazon’s free, ad-supported streaming. Before 2025, it was called Freevee, and before that IMDb TV. Amazon already offered Freevee as a completely free ad-supported service. Amazon has since folded much of that free content into Prime Video, so free titles show up in the main app. Since branding changes, check the Prime Video app to see what’s free in your region.

Is Prime worth it?

It depends on how you shop. If you place orders every couple of weeks, Prime nearly pays for itself in shipping. If you only order a few times a year, you might do better skipping it and paying per order, or timing a free trial around Prime Day.

A few tips to keep more of your money

Check your real use. Open your order history and count how many Prime-eligible orders you placed in the last year.
Share the benefits. Prime lets you share some benefits with other adults in your household. Use the free trial wisely. Amazon commonly offers a 30-day trial. Set a phone reminder before it ends so you aren’t charged by accident.

Look for discounts. Some students, and people on qualifying government assistance, can get reduced pricing. Check Amazon’s current terms. Watch the ad-free upsell. If ads don’t bug you, skip Ultra and keep the $4.99.

Why Amazon keeps changing the deal

Streaming is expensive. Amazon spent more than $7 billion in one year on Amazon Originals, live sports and licensed content. Putting ads on Prime Video lets Amazon make money from viewers without raising Prime’s base price. The tiers also nudge people toward paying a bit more. It’s the same path Netflix, Disney+ and others have taken. According to one comparison, Disney+ and Hulu premium plans cost $18.99 a month each, HBO Max $22.99, and Apple TV+ $12.99. Seen that way, Prime Video is still cheap for what you get.

If you were searching for miniTV hoping for free shows in the U.S., your best bet is the free titles inside Prime Video and other free streaming apps like Tubi or Pluto TV. And if a site claims otherwise, be a little skeptical.
