Cyberpunk fans have had a busy week. Within a couple of days, a new anime season landed on Netflix and CD Projekt Red surprised everyone with a brand-new patch. If you’ve been trying to keep up, here’s a plain breakdown of Cyberpunk 2077 update 2.5, the new Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 series, and how the two connect.
The surprise: Cyberpunk 2077 update 2.5
Almost six years after launch, people assumed the game was done getting big updates. CD Projekt Red clearly had other plans. The studio announced a free patch called the Edgerunners 2 Update, or Update 2.5, arriving October 22 for PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, with the Nintendo Switch 2 version following a little later. It’s also notable because the developers had recently shifted their focus to The Witcher 4, so a major patch wasn’t something most players saw coming.
This isn’t the first time the “last update” turned out not to be the last. The studio’s community manager jokingly admitted back in 2025 that the previous update hadn’t been the final one, and 2.5 proves it once again.
What’s officially confirmed
The official CD Projekt Red Cyberpunk 2077 update announcement was short on details. What the studio confirmed is new items and features, content inspired by Edgerunners 2, cyberware customization and a new dual-wielding playstyle with two pistols at once. The update’s artwork shows V standing back to back with Weak Kingsley, a character from the new anime.
More is coming today. A REDstreams broadcast airs Wednesday at 15:00 UTC on Twitch, YouTube and Steam, and the full patch notes follow the same day.
What’s been leaked (treat it as unconfirmed)
Here’s where I want to be careful. A YouTuber claims to have obtained the patch notes early, and those details come from his video rather than official patch notes. The video was reportedly taken down afterward. Still, the leaked list has been repeated widely, so it’s worth knowing:
- A new perk called Double Trouble. It sits in the Cool skill tree and lets you dual wield power pistols or revolvers.
- Two new side quests. “Clampdown” is set before Edgerunners season 2, and “Welcome to Paradise” takes V on a mysterious tour of Night City.
- Console mods. Mod.io support is reportedly coming to all platforms except the Nintendo Switch 2, along with a field-of-view slider on consoles. One caution from the leak: using mods would disable Trophies on that save file.
- Cosmetic extras. A radio station with tracks from both seasons of the anime, five new “Glamdocs” who customize your arm and hand cyberware, five new clothing sets and new hairstyles.
- Photo Mode additions. Frames inspired by the Cyberpunk trading card game.
If you own the game, you probably don’t need to do anything. The update should download automatically once it’s live, though the same source notes that it’s not yet clear whether any new content requires the Phantom Liberty expansion. That’s one to check in the patch notes.
Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 is out now
The patch is tied to the second season of the anime, and that’s the bigger story for many fans. Edgerunners 2 is a new standalone ten-episode story about redemption and revenge. It premiered worldwide on Netflix on October 20, 2026.
Note the word “standalone.” You don’t need to remember every detail of the first season to follow it. One review makes the same point, saying the new story expands the Cyberpunk 2077 universe without leaning heavily on season 1.
Cyberpunk Edgerunners season 2 characters
New show, new faces. Here are the main ones, without spoilers for the ending:
D. One of the last remaining members of the Serpent Nation, out for revenge on those responsible for the death of his people. One overview describes him as a mysterious nomad.
Roman Carax. A wannabe filmmaker who likes to shoot on celluloid. He ends up traveling with D.
Talia Yang. A terminally ill young woman who is gradually replacing her natural body parts with chrome.
Weak Kingsley. A veteran edgerunner. The English dub features Clancy Brown, and the character is the same one shown with V in the game update’s artwork.
That’s the human cast. The character that gets people talking is not human.
So who is Capri in Cyberpunk?
If you’ve searched for Capri Cyberpunk, this is the answer. Capri, also called Project Capricorn, is a personality construct made by Kyoko and Arasaka, built from many digitized human minds combined into one. In Capri’s own words, she’s powerful like an AI but born of humans.
She’s also the engine of the story. One reviewer says the season’s driving force is heavily inspired by Johnny Silverhand, and calls Capri a rambunctious AI who can only be controlled by special subjects. Another review notes that once Capri enters the picture and inhabits D’s body, the show goes off the charts.
Voice-wise, Capri is played by Brittany Lauda in English and Aoi Koga in Japanese. One critic called the Japanese performance pretty scary, which tells you the tone.
Why the two releases line up
CD Projekt Red has done this before. The first Edgerunners show pushed a wave of new players into the game, and a patch timed to a new season is a smart way to catch that crowd again. Whether you came for the anime or the RPG, the studio wants both sides to feed each other.
Should you jump back in?
If you haven’t played in a while, tomorrow is a reasonable moment to return. A new perk, new quests and console mod support all give you a reason to start a fresh character or revisit an old one. If you only watch the anime, none of this is required, but the Edgerunners 2 content in the game is clearly aimed at you.
